Meet Martina, Coffee Break French learner

Tell us who you are, where you live, your nationality and how long you’ve been learning a language with us.

Australia has been my home for more than 3 decades. I was born in Finland, I lived in Sweden for two years in my teens and in Scotland for 5 years in my 20s. I have officially been learning French (Season 2) with Mark and Anna since February 2019. Before that I was listening to the free podcasts (French Season 1). Now I look forward to starting the French Masterclass.

What experience have you had speaking and learning other languages?

Swedish is my mother tongue (Finland is bi-lingual). Finnish was compulsory at school as was English and German. Finnish was spoken around town when I grew up but I always spoke Swedish at home. I moved a lot as a child, and at one point I had the good fortune to study French. It was love at first sight, but unfortunately I didn’t have the opportunity to study as much French as I would have liked. I also did Latin for one year in high school, but all I can remember is two sentences! At the moment I’m also listening to Coffee Break Spanish (Season 1) to prepare for the Camino de Santiago. I want to be able to communicate in Spanish at least a little. But French is my big passion!

What are your favourite memories of learning a language?

I was only able to communicate in the present tense in French for the longest time, so when I learned to talk about the past and the future I was pretty excited! (Very excited actually!!)

Where would your ideal coffee break be, and with whom?

I would like to explore different parts of France by hiking, and I would love to easily have intelligent conversations with the locals as I enjoy my café crème at a cosy café somewhere in a village in France.

What’s the best language-learning tip you have found works for you?

I do a little every day! I try not just to think about how much I still “have” to learn, I make a habit of noticing how far I have come.

Quick Fire round

• Your favourite language: French
• Your favourite word or phrase in the language: peu à peu
• Do you have a favourite film, TV show, book or singer in the language? Jean de Florette & Manon des Sources
• Your favourite destination to practise your language: France and the French speaking part of Switzerland. I spent a summer in Lausanne a very long time ago and loved it.

Please finish off with a message to your fellow members of the Coffee Break community and the Coffee Break Team.

I love being part of the global Coffee Break Community! Bonjour to everyone out there! Thank you to the entire Coffee Break team, and especially to Mark and Anna who explain grammar in such an easy to understand way and who make learning FUN!!

Bonjour Martina! So nice to meet you! I am also interested in the Chemin St Jacques and hiking in France and Spain. My dream is to begin in Le Puy en Velay, and Auvergne is one of my favorite places in France. Ultreia, et bon chemin à vous!
