This course is aimed at learners with significant experience in learning Spanish. Each episode features two “acts” and an “interval”. In Act I, Mark and Alba have a conversation in Spanish at a normal speaking speed, normally lasting between seven and ten minutes. Act II is presented in English when Mark highlights a number of constructions and grammar points used in the conversation. Between the two acts, Mark and Alba are joined by José, who helps you “take your Spanish to the next level”.

Show Time Spanish was introduced in October 2008 as a follow-on from lesson 80 of Coffee Break Spanish. Presenters Mark and Alba discuss a number of themes and take the opportunity to help listeners build their language skills through varied and lively lessons. In addition to the ongoing discussions and presentations, Show Time Spanish also features a telenovela, Verano Español. This is a soap opera entirely in Spanish which is released every fifth lesson. Listeners can follow the story of Spanish dad Antonio, his Scottish wife Iona, and their bilingual daughter Laura, as they spend the summer in Spain and experience Spanish life first-hand.

Bonus materials and pricing

Each lesson of Show Time Spanish features around twelve minutes of Spanish spoken at a normal speaking rate. While this may prove challenging for some learners, we provide full transcripts of all conversations and presentations as part of our bonus materials. These materials are presented in two Seasons: Season 1 includes episodes 1-20, and Season 2 includes episodes 21-40. Season Passes are available as Gold Memberships. The materials which make up these Season Passes are as follows:

  • Lesson guides: printable lesson guides in pdf format which provide full transcripts of all the Spanish used in the conversations and presentations of the show. The guides also provide vocabulary and comprehensive grammatical explanations to help listeners understand more from each episode. You can download sample lesson guides for lesson 3.
  • Encore podcast: having listened to the main episode, listeners can study the transcripts and consolidate their learning with the grammar notes. The Encore Podcast tests a number of points of grammar covered in each lesson with eight translation questions from English into Spanish. The phrase is presented to the listener on the recording, the listener then has time to work out the translation, and then Mark talks through the grammar points in each sentence, working through the translation with the listener. You can download a sample of the encore podcast for lesson 1 here.
  • Encore notes: the English and Spanish translation phrases are provided in the Encore notes. Download a sample here.

Listeners’ testimonials

Don’t take our word for it – read what Show Time Spanish listeners have to say about the show. All reviews are taken from iTunes UK and US. If you’ve been watching the series, perhaps you would consider writing a review in iTunes yourself.

Professional, useful, stimulating and challenging! As someone who admittedly has a firm grasp of the Spanish language, this is a podcast to keep even the most advanced level speakers on their toes. If you are learning Spanish at a high level in education in your free time, I thoroughly recommend this podcast to help you out. I just wish that this had been available when I was doing my GCSEs or A-Levels! istabo, iTunes UK, November 08

Well conceived and very professional. This is a highly recommended 2nd stage Spanish course. This is particularly useful for someone who like myself has spent a year or two with beginners level Spanish (or perhaps has followed the 80 episodes of its sister podcast, Coffee Break Spanish) and is now looking for something a little more challenging. This is it! Mark and his co-presenters use a highly entertaining format to gently introduce the listener to more complex language features whilst at the same time preparing the ground for the main “shows” which occur every fifth episode. If you’re seriously interested in moving to an intermediate course, or wish to revise some ‘rusty’ language you may have learned years ago, give this a try. You will not be disappointed. KenTheProg, iTunes UK, January 09

I would highly recommend this to anyone that wants to take their Spanish to the next level – it literally does! The program explores the finer details of the language that many classes don’t cover. I have studied the language for about five years (four in high school, one at university level), and I was looking for a program to fine-tune my Spanish. Even at the first lesson I learned something new. Jockothief, iTunes US, January 08

I love this podcast! Because I teach ESL, I am very picky about choosing language learning materials for myself. The people who constructed this program clearly took great care in making something that really promotes learning, plus I have fun listening to it. The vocabulary and grammar instruction is quite relevant. I feel so motivated when I hear the same phrases used later in the “telenovela” (every fifth episode). I usually listen to each episode twice, but I like how they build on each other for continued mastery. I have tried many other podcasts in several languages and this one is by far the most professional, the most creative, and the most useful in advancing my abilities.
