una ensalada (f) - “a salad”
el jamón (m) - “(the) ham”
el queso (m) - “(the) cheese”
el pollo (m) - “(the) chicken”
el pescado (m) - “(the) fish”

Note that the words above (jamón, queso, pollo and pescado) are all masculine words, so the word for “the” is el.
